ASPEN, Colo. -- An international hairstylist who owns an Aspen hair salon is charged with stealing actor Kevin Costner's laptop, which contained private photographs of Costner's 2004 wedding. But Pascal Bensimon told the Aspen Daily News that he was drugged at the wedding and didn't steal the Apple Powerbook, even though a security consultant hired by Costner said he found the laptop in Bensimon's possession.Bensimon, who faces a felony theft charge in the case, is free on a $5,000 bond in the case after turning himself in to authorities earlier this week.
The laptop was reported stolen from Costner's Aspen-area home on Sept. 25, 2004 -- the day he wed Christine Baumgartner. Bensimon had been hired to provide hair services for guests attending the wedding.According to an arrest affidavit, Costner's digital camera also disappeared after the wedding. It has not been found.A month after the wedding, Bensimon's son contacted Apple Computer to ask for a new password for the computer, giving the serial number of Costner's laptop, according to the arrest affidavit. An employee of Bensimon's Haute Coiffure told investigators that she first saw Bensimon with the laptop about a week after the wedding, the affidavit stated.Bensimon, contacted by the newspaper, denied that he stole the laptop."Some people put some drugs in my glass. I was not conscious for the day that I was there and I don't understand what's coming up now," Bensimon told the Aspen Daily News.During the investigation, a private security consultant hired by Costner posed as a freelance journalist and interviewed Bensimon, and asked to see photographs of his work. The consultant said Bensimon showed him photos on an Apple Powerbook G4 and he was able to match the serial number of the computer to Costner's stolen laptop. The consultant contacted a Pitkin County investigator, who went the hair salon and confronted Bensimon, according to the affidavit. "Bensimon stated he took the computer because he was angry with the woman responsible for the Costner wedding, as Bensimon believed she treated him poorly," the affidavit said.Bensimon is scheduled to appear in court on the felony theft charge on Dec. 19.According to a recent article in the Aspen Times, Bensimon was born in Casablanca, Morocco, but was raised in Israel and France, where he began his career in hair design. He worked in Paris, New York and Atlanta before moving to Aspen and opening his hair salon last month. He charges women $225 for a haircut and men pay $125.In addition to 1990's "Dances With Wolves," which won seven Oscars, Costner's movie credits include "No Way Out," "The Untouchables," "Bull Durham," "Waterworld," "Tin Cup," "JFK," "Open Range" and "Field of Dreams."His current film is "Rumor Has It," which opens on Dec. 25.
