Professor Wrestling: 2008 Wishes

What Wrestling Needs This Year

Listen up!

Class is in session.

It's high time I let loose with my opinions on the state of wrestling, and there's no time like the present. So here's eight things I'd like to see in 2008.

Treat Ric Flair's 'Win Or Retire' Angle With Care
The current storyline dictates that Ric Flair wins or he retires. That's fine – but milk it. Let it go week to week, for as long as possible. This is the best segment on WWE programming, bar none -- and to give up on it prematurely would be foolish. Flair is STILL money! How would I write it? Flair wins a WWE title match on a pay-per-view, and then retires as champ the next night on RAW. He then creates and manages a new version of the Four Horsemen for one last run. It's so perfect, I don't understand why it hasn't been done yet.

Give Chavo Guerrero The ECW Heavyweight Title
It would be the first step in blowing up that miserable show. Chavo deserves a major title simply for being there week in, week out. Plus, how many bad Chavo matches can you recall? Not many. The guy is a workhorse. Reward him with gold, and put current ECW champ C.M. Punk back in the babyface chasing-the-gold role.

Restore A.J. Styles To Greatness
Why is one of the best grapplers on Earth made to look like a weak fool on TNA each week? Bad writing is the answer. No, make that horrible writing. If he's going to be a comedy act, at least give him funny material to work with. Styles -- the current lackey for Kurt Angle -- needs to get his edge back.

Lose Vickie Guerrero
I'm not sure why she's the "Smackdown!" chief. Is this a sympathy hire because her husband, Eddie, died? It sure looks like it. I'm sure she's a nice woman in real life, but she doesn't fit in this circus. It's time to move on. To have her on camera is uncomfortable.

Develop Or Dump WWE Divas
There's nothing wrong with eye candy. But does it have to be so brainless? How about an entertaining wrestling match every once in a while? TNA can do it with Gail Kim and Awesome Kong. Why can't WWE?

Fix TNA "Impact!"
This show gives me a headache. Even at two hours, there's too much going on. Also, does everyone have to scream throughout the entire show? Or is it just Don West? The writing, as I touched on earlier, couldn't be worse. Comedy bits are usually not funny. Serious bits (anything to do with Abyss) are often incomprehensible. The solution? Focus on the great X-Division. It's a no-brainer.

Give Us More History
There's nothing wrong with a solid backstory. Not just from a few weeks ago, but how about explaining what happened to a particular performer a few years ago? Or a decade ago? Certainly the videotape libraries are there to illustrate certain points. Wrestling should be more like baseball and embrace its rich history.

Tone Down The Sales Pitches
I know money makes the world go around. But do I have to be bombarded with every possible product WWE might want to sell me at every possible second? It's an annoying turn-off. If I want constant hucksterism, I'll watch NASCAR.

Which, naturally, brings me to a plug! (I crack myself up.) Don't hesitate to download the "Old School, New School" podcast, starring Dr. Mike Lano, George "The Authority" Schire and yours truly. This week, we talk about their 2008 wishes, go thumbs up/thumbs down on William Regal and name their ultimate "Comeback Kid." It's EPISODE 61 and you can get it RIGHT HERE!

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
