Professor Wrestling: 'Final Resolution' Results

Angle Defends TNA Strap Against Cage

POSTED: 8:27 pm PST January 2, 2008
UPDATED: 10:01 pm PST January 9, 2008

Listen up!

Class is in session.

It looked great on paper. Kurt Angle defending the TNA heavyweight belt against Christian Cage at "Final Resolution" this past Sunday. It can't miss, right? Wrong! Instead of focusing on the title, TNA made "whose side is A.J. Styles on" the main focus of the match. Sorry, but that's a lame angle -- and TNA can do better. Oh well, at least I knew who was going to win. We'll get to that later, but first, the rest of the card:

Podcast: 'Old School, New School' -- Episode 60

Challenge Match: Abyss vs. Judas Mesias
What Should Happen: Abyss, the monster, apparently has a real name now: Chris Parks. While I'm all in favor of this guy's character developing, does he have to be put in matches against other mystery men like Mesias? Whoever has been writing Abyss' scripts (his program against Sting included) has been reading too many bad comic books. There's nothing wrong with creepy monster storylines, but the Abyss tale is sometimes so confusing, one doesn't care what happens. As for this match, if Judas wins, reveal who he is and why he's in TNA as soon as possible, or quit wasting my time.

What Will Happen: Abyss will send Judas packing.

What Did Happen: Judas got the pin.

Challenge Match: Booker T and Sharmell vs. Robert Roode and Ms. Brooks
What Should Happen: Booker T is in mid-card hades at TNA right now. To make matters worse, he has to slum it in mixed-tag messes like this one. What should happen here? Does it matter? Roode and Booker should be in the top-tier. This is a waste of time.

What Will Happen: I'll take Booker and his bride to win.

What Did Happen: Booker and his bride won. After the match, Ms. Brooks finally slugged Roode, who has treated her like dirt for about a year.

Challenge Match: Kaz vs. Black Reign
What Should Happen: It's Kaz, the TNA up-and-comer, taking on Dustin Rhodes, son of Dusty. Black Reign is Dustin's alter-ego -- but Rhodes doesn't realize he's B.R. They're playing the amnesia card, or something. Which begs the question, doesn't Kaz have a last name? Or is he like Cher? I'm confused. Thank the good Lord reader Allen Apgar came to the rescue and told me his name is Frankie Kazarian. A.A. says Kaz used his full name when he first came into TNA, but then shortened his handle when he hooked up with Raven and Saratonin. Saratonin? Who on Earth would name their kid Saratonin? It sounds like a moisturizer. But hey, this is TNA. Who should win? Dusty!

What Will Happen: Kaz will keep his awesome momentum going by pinning a guy who now cozies up to a rat.

What Did Happen: Kaz wins the match, and then steals B.R.'s rat. Who writes the stuff?

TNA Tag Team Championship: A.J. Styles and Tyson Tomko (c) vs. Samoa Joe and Kevin Nash
What Should Happen: One of these wrestlers doesn't belong in this match. His name rhymes with hash. Who should win? When slapping together matches like these at the last second, I vote for the current champions to retain.

What Will Happen: Joe's shaky alliance with Big Daddy Cool will break down. Tomko and Styles will win.

What Did Happen: Nash abandoned Joe in the middle of the match. Tomko and Styles took it from there, pinning Joe.

TNA Women's Championship: Gail Kim (c) vs. Awesome Kong
What Should Happen: Now here's a storyline that works. Kim is the champ. Kong is the challenger. Kim is relatively small. Kong is awesomely big and brutal. Kim isn't afraid of Kong, even though Kong has beaten the snot out of her on more than one occasion. This match is no disqualification, which means the bigger female wrestler will probably win. Works for me.

What Will Happen: Nothing wrong with Kong. The awesome one will win.

What Did Happen: Kong gave it her best shot, but Kim previaled and got the three count.

Ultimate-X Match: Jay Lethal and The Motor City Machineguns vs. Team 3D and Johnny Devine
What Should Happen: Team 3D -- Brothers Ray and Devon -- have been pushing around the X-Division guys for a few months now, and this match is supposed to settle all scores. The winner is determined by grabbing the X-Division belt (which Team 3D swipe from rightful champ Lethal) which will be perched above the ring on criss-crossing ropes. I'd have to say it's time for the X-men to put the heels in their place once and for all and win this thing.

What Will Happen: I'm picking Lethal and his pals to find a way to get some "X."

What Did Happen: Team 3D and Devine won when they used a ladder in the match to grab the belt. I thought that wasn't allowed, but I guess it doesn't matter. This is TNA, and nothing ever makes any sense.

TNA Championship Match: Kurt Angle (c) vs. Christian Cage
What Should Happen: These two should have a clean match which should last no less than 45 minutes. Cage should win back his title that he never truly lost in an epic battle against Mr. Angle, your former Olympic champion. It should be a five-star match to kick off what should be TNA's year of breakout greatness. Should. But reality is that A.J. Styles will get involved and ruin the whole thing. If there's useless outside interference to throw into the mix, you'll see it.

What Will Happen:Angle retains due to outside interference from Styles and/or Tomko.

What Did Happen: Angle retained due to outside interference from Styles. Yuck.

Show over. You know, TNA could be really, really great. But at the end of the day, its "Impact!" show on Spike is usually a head-scratcher and the monthly pay-per-views are usually a mess. This one was no exception. Why do we care who A.J. Styles is going to side with? It's an angle so dumb, you'd think Vince Russo wrote it. Oh, that's right. He did. Why not just have a wrestling match featuring Angle versus Christian with no malarkey? As for my picks, four right and three wrong this time around. A moneymaker as usual.

If you're looking for more 'rasslin thrills, don't forget to download Episode 60 of "Old School, New School" -- the Professor Wrestling podcast. This week, my co-hosts Dr. Mike Lano and George "The Authority" Schire go thumbs up/thumbs down on the Ric Flair-Triple H match on the New Year's Eve edition of "Raw." They also give their four cents on great ring entrances and rip WWE for its booking of Chris Jericho. How do you get it? CLICK RIGHT HERE. How do you listen to shows 1-59? Easy as pie. Just click onto the "Podcast Page" in the sidebar above. Enjoy.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
