Professor Wrestling: 'Judgment Day' Results

Cena, Edge, McMahon Risk Heavyweight Straps

POSTED: 8:31 pm PDT May 17, 2007

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Did you survive "Judgment Day?" As someone who covets readers to this column, I hope so. Don't want you disappearing into thin air or anything. As for the wrestling show of the same name, I'll tell you what happened in that WWE extravaganza. But first, I'm going to plug Episode 31 (31?!) of the Professor Wrestling podcast, "Old School, New School." You can download that baby RIGHT HERE! You'll love it.

As for the show, here are my predictions, followed by what really happened:

Challenge Match: Elijah Burke vs. C.M. Punk
What Should Happen: Punk turned heel on ECW for a few weeks, but has turned babyface again. Here, he faces the guy who tried to lure him to the dark side. This might be a good match, especially if Punk works hard. A pin by either contestant would be fine.

What Will Happen: I think Burke will get some help from his New Breed stable and get the pin.

What Did Happen: Punk got the pin and the win.

Challenge Match: Carlito vs. Ric Flair
What Should Happen: This is pretty simple for me. Flair should be allowed a bit of dignity and be awarded a win on a PPV.

What Will Happen: Time to bet the mortgage again. Carlito will win.

What Did Happen: Shocker! WWE let Flair win on PPV! With a figure-four leglock! Hope you didn't lose too much money listening to me.

Challenge Match: Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton
What Should Happen: There's no title on the line here, which guarantees Michaels will win. That's kind of sad, because he really should be wearing gold sometime soon. He's the top guy working in wrestling right now. The absolute best.

What Will Happen: Michaels gets the clean pin.

What Did Happen: WWE played the head injury angle with Michaels, and the match was over -- in Orton's favor -- when the ref called for the bell after four minutes. Odd.

U.S. Title Match: Chris Benoit (c) vs. MVP
What Should Happen: This match harkens back to the old school, with a two-out-of-three falls format. The best way to book this match is for MVP to win the first fall, and for Benoit to take the second and then do something totally unexpected: have MVP win the third. I've never seen a wrestling show where the winner of the first fall wins the third. Make history! As for who should be champ, it's time for Benoit to give up this secondary strap and be elevated to the top tier again.

What Will Happen: I'm going with MVP to upset Benoit.

What Did Happen: MVP beat Benoit in two falls to grab the U.S. title.

ECW World Championship Match: Vince McMahon (c) and Shane McMahon and Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley
What Should Happen: This is a rematch from "Backlash," where the WWE owner put the ECW belt on himself. While I enjoy Vince as an actor, I'd rather have the wrestlers wrestle. If it were up to me, I'd have Umaga turn on Vince somehow after Lashley is vanquished.

What Will Happen: Vince retains his belt as Umaga once again does all the heavy lifting.

What Did Happen: Vince retained the belt because Lashley pinned Shane, not him.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Edge (c) vs. Batista
What Should Happen: Something tells me if Batista were to be champion, he would have been given the belt (Undertaker is injured) instead of Edge. I smell a Mark Henry interference in this one, with a tweener Kennedy coming to Batista's rescue. WWE's money match has to be Edge-Kennedy down the line, with Batista and Henry in a secondary program.

What Will Happen: Edge will hang onto his new title.

What Did Happen: Edge pinned Batista with a hook of the tights.

WWE Championship Match: John Cena (c) vs. The Great Khali
What Should Happen: I hate to be pessimistic, but this had BAD written all over it. Neither man is much of a ring worker, especially Khali. It would be really stupid to give him this title. Cena, who has been beaten down by Khali on free TV in recent weeks, has to be the favorite to win -- but I'm nervous. McMahon seems to push Khali no matter how bad he is.

What Will Happen: Common sense has to prevail. Cena will get the victory.

What Did Happen: Cena beat Khali via submission, keeping his belt.

And with that, "Judgment Day" was history. How many did I get right? After we count 'em up, that's four right and three not so right. I'll admit, I was off my game on the undercard. But when it comes to the money matches, is there anyone better doing this on planet Earth? Didn't think so.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
