POSTED: 8:13 am PST January 4, 2007

The multinational drama "Babel," girl-group musical "Dreamgirls" and quirky road trip comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" led the nominations for the 13th-annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the organization announced Thursday.

All three films scored outstanding acting ensemble nominations In addition, "Babel" earned two supporting female actor nods for Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi. "Dreamgirls" scored supporting female and male actor nominations for Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy, while "Little Miss Sunshine" produced female and male supporting actor nods for Abigail Breslin and Alan Arkin.

Also in the running for ensemble award are the casts of the Robert Kennedy-themed drama "Bobby" and crime-thriller "The Departed." Noticeably absent from the best ensemble nominations were awards season favorites Clint Eastwood's World War II epics "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima," and the Sept. 11 docudrama "United 93."

Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for two SAG awards, for lead actor for "Blood Diamond" and supporting actor for "The Departed." Surprisingly absent from both categories was perennial awards season nominee Jack Nicholson, whose earned high praise for his role as a ruthless mob boss in "The Departed." He's been promoted as a supporting actor during awards season but is arguably one of the lead actors in the film.

Instead, taking on DiCaprio for the lead actor SAG award are Ryan Gosling for "Half Nelson," Peter O'Toole for "Venus," Will Smith for "The Pursuit of Happyness" and Forest Whitaker for "The Last King of Scotland."

Up for the female actor SAG are Penelope Cruz for "Volver," Judi Dench for "Notes on a Scandal," Helen Mirren for "The Queen," Meryl Streep for "The Devil Wears Prada" and Kate Winslet for "Little Children."

"Little Children" also produced a supporting actor nomination for Jackie Earl Haley. Joining Haley, DiCaprio, Murphy and Arkin in the supporting actor race is Djimon Hounsou for "Blood Diamond."

Taking on Barraza, Kikuchi, Hudson and Breslin for the supporting female trophy is Cate Blanchett for "Notes on a Scandal."

Of the top industry honors presented to performers, only the Screen Actors Guild Awards are selected purely by actors' peers. The nominations usually provide a strong indication of which actors are in line to receive Oscar nominations and will evenutally be winners.

Last year, "Crash" won the best ensemble trophy and went on to capture the Best Picture Oscar. Three of the four top acting Oscars also went to SAG-award winners.

On the television side, the nominees for the best ensemble cast in a drama include "24," "Boston Legal," "Deadwood," "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Sopranos," while "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "Ugly Betty," "The Office" and "Weeds" were tapped for the best comedy acting ensemble.

Up for the SAG award for best male actor in a drama are James Gandolfini in "The Sopranos," Michael C. Hall for "Dexter," Hugh Laurie for "House," James Spader for "Boston Legal" and Kiefer Sutherland for "24." The female drama actor nominees include Patricia Arquette for "Medium," Edie Falco for "The Sopranos," Mariska Hargitay for "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," Kyra Sedgwick for "The Closer" and Chandra Wilson for "Grey's Anatomy."

The male comedy actor nominees include Alec Baldwin for "30 Rock," Steve Carell for "The Office," Jason Lee for "My Name is Earl," Jeremy Piven for "Entourage" and Tony Shalhoub for "Monk." Up for the female comedy actor trophy are America Ferrera for "Ugly Betty," Felicity Huffman for "Desperate Housewives," Julia Louis-Dreyfus for "The New Adventures of Old Christine," Megan Mullaly for "Will and Grace," Mary-Louis Parker for "Weeds" and Jaime Pressly for "My Name is Earl."

Mirren is the only actor to score individual nods in both the film and television categories, earning a best female actor in a television movie or miniseries nomination for "Elizabeth I." Also up in the category are Annette Bening for "Mrs. Harris," Shirley Jones for "Hidden Places," Cloris Leachman for "Tarnower's Sister" and Greta Scacchi for "Broken Trail."

Competing for the best male actor in a miniseries or a television movie award are Thomas Haden Church for "Broken Trail," Robert Duvall for "Broken Trail," Jeremy Irons for "Elizabeth I," William H. Macy for "Nightmares and Dreamscapes" and Matthew Perry for "The Ron Clark Story."

Winners will be unveiled at the guild's annual ceremony Jan. 28, which will be broadcast live on TNT and TBS.

The guild previously announced that legendary actress Julie Andrews will be given this year's SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
