Professor Wrestling: Recapping 'No Mercy'

King Booker Retains In 4-Way Title Tilt

POSTED: 1:45 pm PDT October 5, 2006

Listen up!

Class is in session.

This Sunday night, itwas 'No Mercy' as the WWE "SmackDown!" players did their pay-per-view thing in Raleigh, N.C. Well get to the card in a second, but first, another reminder that we have a brand-new audio podcast you can download, RIGHT HERE! It's called "Old School, New School," as I chat with wrestling geniuses Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire on a number of topics each week. Check it out!

OK, now for my "No Mercy" prognostications, followed by what actually happened!

Challenge Match: Matt Hardy vs. Gregory Helms
What Should Happen: For some reason, Helms' WWE Cruiserweight belt is not on the line here. That's dumb, since I have to pay for the show. Give me a title match, already! Is it THAT hard? That's what should happen. Who knows, maybe it'll gel into something more at the last minute.

What Will Happen: If the belt is not on the line, Hardy will win. If it is, Helms will retain.

What Did Happen: Hardy won the non-title tilt with a clean pin.

WWE Tag Team Championship Match: Brian Kendrick and Paul London (c) vs. Idol Stevens and K.C. James
What Should Happen: Well, I'm not going to lie and say that this is the best WWE has to offer, but at least a title is up for grabs. I'd keep the belts on Kendrick and London just because I'm tired of titles changing all the time. It cheapens the belts.

What Will Happen: I'm going with Kendrick and London to win.

What Did Happen: Kendrick and London were victorious to retain their belts.

Falls Count Anywhere Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
What Should Happen: Some people say this is a tacky feud, since the late Eddie Guerrero is linked to the storyline. That really doesn't bug me. The fact that Chavo seems to have lost his charisma does. As does the involvement of Eddie's real-life widow. Does she really need the money that badly? If so, it's a sad state of affairs. Eddie was a big draw for a long, long time. Bottom line: Rey is slumming here. This should be a no contest for a former World Heavyweight Champion.

What Will Happen: I think Chavo will get the unexpected win.

What Did Happen: Rey was slumming, as he beat Chavo handily. The writers surprised me here. I thought Chavo was going to get a minor push.

Challenge Match: Undertaker vs. Ken Kennedy
What Should Happen: Mr. Kennedy is the current U.S. Champion, but this is another non-title match. Why? It makes no sense for me to buy this show if nothing substantial is on the line. WWE should realize that on paper, this whole event looks like an average episode of "SmackDown!" and go back to the drawing board.

What Will Happen: With nothing at stake, UT wins.

What Did Happen: With nothing at stake, Kennedy won after UT got disqualified. I should have seen that coming.

World Heavyweight Championship 'Fatal Four-Way' Match: Booker T (c) vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Batista vs. Finlay
What Should Happen: Batista and Finlay were added late presumably because Lashley isn't that great of a wrestler, and couldn't pull off a singles match with Booker. That's fine, I guess, so this isn't a bad decision. In this format, the first man who gets a pin gets the belt. I have to think it'll be Booker. WWE has invested too much into his character to give the belt back to Batista.

What Will Happen: Booker T will still wear the gold when the night is over.

What Did Happen: Booker T pinned Finlay for the victory, retaining his belt.

That's it. For the record, I was three-for-five on this show -- nailing the main event. Not a bad night at the plate for your professor. I still got it, kids! So that's that, and don't forget -- listen to our new weekly podcast "Old, School, New School." Download it RIGHT HERE!

Now scram. Class dismissed!
