Local Teen Wins Prestigious Fellowship

Home-Schooled Student Heading To Harvard

A San Diego teenage math whiz has won a Davidson fellowship, which will put $50,000 toward his schooling when he heads to Harvard University this fall, it was reported Monday.

Michael Viscardi, 17, is one of 16 Davidson Fellows for 2006, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The Davidson Institute for Talent Development spotlighted the fellows, all minors, for their achievements in science, technology, mathematics, music, literature and philosophy, according to the newspaper.

The fellows received scholarships of $10,000 to $50,000. Viscardi was one of three to receive the maximum amount, the Union-Tribune reported.

Viscardi, who was home-schooled, has received numerous awards for solving the Dirichlet Problem, originally formulated in the 19th century to study the thermal equilibrium of a heated metal plate.

Late last year, Viscardi won the top $100,000 prize from the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Math, Science and Technology competition. In March, he took top honors at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, and he placed high in May at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Indianapolis.

The Davidson Institute was established in 1999 by Bob and Jan Davidson, former educational software entrepreneurs, to recognize and support exceptionally intelligent young people.
