Transferred Teachers Want Classrooms Back

Nine Teachers Involuntarily Transferred

Nine San Diego teachers were involuntarily transferred out of their schools last September and they are fighting to get their classrooms back, 10News reported.

The teachers are claiming the transfers were unfair and uncalled for, however, the San Diego School District insists it did everything by the book.

"It has nothing to do with teaching. I've had exemplary evaluations for 17 years. I've worked for five principals and never had a problem," transferred teacher Pam Lloyd said.

The principal at Ocean Beach Elementary School had Lloyd transferred for being a disruptive influence.

"She said I rolled my eyes at staff meetings. I undermined her authority and I was keeping her from moving the school forward," Lloyd said.

A similar experience for bilingual teacher, Camille Zombro -- who was taken away from the challenge of inner-city Baker Elementary and sent to Tierrasanta.

"She felt I had an undermining influence and that she felt it was in the best interest of the students that I not be there because we had philosophical differences in her opinion," Zombro said.

Both teachers said they are being punished for doing their jobs as representatives for the teachers union.

"I, for example, corrected inaccuracies that my principal was misrepresenting information in the contract to teachers; misrepresenting information about No Child Left Behind, and several other things where I had to come in and tell folks the truth," Zombro said.

Zombro is also vice president of the San Diego Educators Association. She said under their contract, teachers can't be transferred for arbitrary reasons.

District officials said they weren't.

"They were all based on individual circumstances regarding, you know, their involvement at that school and issues that they had with the site administrator or with other folks at the school site," school district attorney Ricardo Soto said.

Soto also said he takes issue with claims the principals did not follow procedures in the actual transfer of the teachers.

"I was notified in May, late May of last year that she there were some things she wasn't happy that I had done. Back-dated for nine months, but not notified until May," Lloyd said.

Lloyd is on medical stress leave while the union files grievances against the district.

She and Zombro said they share one wish.

"I would like it to go in our favor. And I'd like to go back to Ocean Beach," Lloyd said.

"I want to go back to Baker. I want to go back to my school," Zombro said.

Currently, the teachers union is waiting to take the issue forward to arbitration. The process could take up to two years.
