SAN DIEGO -- In a ranking of the world's 200 best universities, the Times of London named the University of California San Diego 24th. Three California schools made the top 10 -- UC Berkeley was ranked second, Caltech in Pasadena fourth and Stanford seventh. UCLA was ranked 26th.
The top-ranked school was Harvard, while Oxford and Cambridge in England were ranked fifth and sixth respectively. The list, in the newspaper's Higher Education Supplement, was based on a survey of 1,300 academics in 88 countries. Respondents were asked to name the best institutions in the fields about which they felt knowledgeable. The survey also considered the amount of research produced by faculty members, the ratio of faculty to students and the university's success in attracting foreign students and internationally-renowned academics.
