More than a half-million teenagers and adults in San Diego County are unable to read, but it isn't too late for them, 10News reported.

A San Diego-based business has developed a unique teaching tool that is helping thousands of illiterate learn to read.

Reading Upgrade is a web-based course that uses music, video and games to teach adolescents and adults to read.

"They are saying the sound, they are seeing it on the screen and they are hearing it through the music," Reading Upgrade tutor Jennifer Butler said.

Reading Upgrade can be installed to any Internet-connected computer. Students complete the course in 30 to 60 minute sessions each day.

"In our program, we average 2.5 grade level increase after they started, which is huge," Butler said.

Reading Upgrade helped Pearlina Bohanna, 56, finally understand how to read.

"Oh my gosh, she's reading novels, she's writing stories. It's truly amazing to see someone who's just blossomed into a reader," Butler said.

Several schools in San Diego County, including La Costa Canyon, Loma Verde Elementary and Project Read have tested Reading Upgrade and have seen amazing results.
