Commonly Asked Questions Regarding First 5 For Kids

What is First 5 For Kids?

First 5 For Kids is a partnership between KPBS and 10News designed to increase awareness and empowerment for all San Diego parents during the most critical developmental stage for their children, ages zero to 5.

Funded by the First 5 Commission of San Diego, First 5 For Kids provides valuable information for parents through resources such as public service announcements, on-line content, newscasts, radio programs, events and a variety of print materials such as information packets.

How did it all begin?

In 1998, California voters passed Proposition 10, which established the California Children and Families Act. Tax on tobacco products was increased to fund services for improving the health and development of California's children from the prenatal period to age 5.

How is Prop 10 funded?

In California, about $700 million in revenue comes from the tobacco tax each year. Some of these funds are used for statewide initiatives; the rest is distributed toward counties. San Diego County's share is about $40 million annually. This amount is expected to decline as the number of smokers decreases.

What is the First 5 Commission of San Diego?

The First 5 Commission of San Diego oversees Prop 10 activities in our county. They are dedicated to a vision that San Diego children who enter school will be physically, socially, emotionally and developmentally ready to learn. The First 5 Commission of San Diego decides how the money from Prop 10 is best spent to achieve this vision.

Who are the other organizations funded by the First 5 Commission of San Diego?
