About 85,000 children in San Diego County do not have health care coverage, which could lead to serious health and developmental consequences, 10News reported.

A program called California Kids Healthcare Foundation provides uninsured children access to health coverage.

The program provides children up to 18 years old with health insurance. However, children ages 2 through 4 are paid for by the First 5 Commission of San Diego, in partnership with KPBS and KGTV/Channel 10's QKids program.

"If problems are identified early on, they are able to treat those issues prior to them becoming serious concerns and possibly even causing hospitalization," California Kids spokeswoman Martha Jazo-Bajet said.

She said the program gives parents a sense of security.

Parent Maria Cervantes said the services will help guarantee her daughters stay healthy.

"She is very happy that they are now covered because she herself has diabetes and she's very concerned that the children may develop diabetes in adult life," a translator for Cervantes said.
