QKids Program Prepares Children For Kindergarten

Teaches Parents To Improve Physical, Social, Intellectual Growth

Are San Diego parents doing enough to prepare their children to begin school? While all of us try our best, there is always something new to learn.

One countywide program is teaching parents how to improve the physical, social, and intellectual growth of their children. It's called QKids.

Started by the First 5 Commission of San Diego, QKids is a joint project of KGTV/San Diego's 10, KPBS, and the commission.

The goal is to make sure all San Diego children, from birth to age five, are getting the help they need to prepare them to enter kindergarten as learners.

QKids does this by informing parents of the programs and opportunities available throughout the county to help them raise 'Quality Kids'.

The First 5 Commission of San Diego, using tax revenues from the sale of tobacco products, funds the programs.

The programs include "Welcome Home Baby" in the North County. The home visit program offers nurses who can answer new mothers' questions, and check on the health and well being of their babies.

The commission funds a program that rewards day- care providers who take early childhood education classes, improving the quality of day care in San Diego.

And in the South Bay, the commission funds a mobile library called the WOW Mobile. The WOW Mobile brings books and storytellers to young families, ensuring that all South Bay children are read to at an early age.

Every Tuesday on 10News Midday @ 11 a.m., news anchor Lisa Lake will tell you more about the QKids program, and how it could help improve the lives of your children.
