SD School District Reinstates Previously Cut Jobs

SAN DIEGO -- Only a fraction of the teachers who received pink slips in recent months will lose their jobs after all, it was reported Wednesday.In separate board meetings around the county Tuesday night, three school district rescinded more than 800 layoff notices and restored all permanent teaching positions that had been threatened, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The county's largest district, the San Diego Unified School District, reinstated more than 428 positions, most of them held by teachers -- 308 at the elementary school level and nearly 28 for high schools.
That leaves just 206 probationary teachers facing layoffs at the end of 2007-08 school year on June 30.The change of heart comes on the heels of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's promise to not cut education spending in the state's upcoming budget.Other local school boards that voted Tuesday night to rescind layoff notices are Poway Unified and Chula Vista Elementary school district.Poway Unified officials said they would pull back layoff notices for more than 100 classroom teachers who received pink slips in March, the Union-Tribune reported.Chula Vista Elementary officials rescinded 274 layoff notices previously sent to classroom teachers.
