SDUSD Confirms 617 Layoffs

POSTED: 11:33 am PDT May 14, 2008
UPDATED: 11:45 am PDT May 14, 2008

San Diego Unified School District high school English teachers, counselors and librarians are breathing easier Wednesday, but not everyone facing layoff dodged the bullet.

The District board of trustees agreed Tuesday night not to lay off 102 English teachers, 76 counselors and 15 librarians at the request of Superintendent Terry Grier. The board then voted to finalize 617 of the 903 preliminary pink slips issued to other district employees in March.

In addition to the 193 English teachers, counselors and librarians who will be kept on, 93 preliminary layoff notices were rescinded because of miscalculations in retirement dates and errors in seniority rankings, leaving 617 on the chopping block. Most of the employees who are still facing layoff are teachers in subjects other than English.

San Diego Unified is looking to cut $80 million from the next school year's budget because of anticipated shortfalls in the state's budget. Several other school district in the county have authorized layoffs, but not as many as at San Diego Unified, the county's largest school district.

The board split on its decision to finalize 617 layoff notices, with school board president Katherine Nakamura and trustees John de Beck and Mitz Lee in favor and trustees Luis Acle and Shelia Jackson opposed.
