10News Editorial: Surf Camp Hazing

Punishment, yes. Prosecution, no!

Parents who sent their children to Surf Camps this summer may have gotten more than they bargained for.

Last week, the Surf Institute Camp in Carlsbad came under criminal investigation for hazing practices. Some parents claimed camp counselors punished children by hitting them, tying them to poles and putting them in trash cans.

If the allegations are true, 10News says Jason Lagadere, who runs the camp, should have known better and deserves to be fired.

But 10News also urges Oceanside Harbor Police Chief Don Hadley to resist the calls for criminal charges against the counselors.

These hazing practices may have been stupid but solving one case of excessive punishment with another just doesn't make sense.

Police Chief Hadley, make sure camp counselors have the necessary background checks, counselor training and oversight. That will ensure our children's safety, not prosecution.

That's our opinion, what's yours?
