10News Editorial: Toll Road
Airdates: April 9, 10
Keep the parkway out of our parklands. Last month, an Orange County agency voted to go ahead with plans to build a toll road between state Route 241 in Rancho Santa Margarita and Interstate 5 in San Clemente. The project is intended to relieve congestion on I-5. But the chosen route includes a stretch that would take over 300 acres of San Onofre State Beach, about 15 percent of the park -- our park. Now, Attorney General Bill Lockyer and environmental groups filed lawsuits to stop the Orange County group from moving forward. 10News agrees. Six-lane toll roads don't belong in our state parks. We call on Key Ryan, chairman of the toll road agency's board, to take this route off his list. Use other alternatives that don't erode our public parklands. Because once you take them, they're gone forever. That's our opinion, what's yours?
