10News Editorial: Rancho Penasquitos Power Line

Airdate: April 4

Nimbyism is alive and well in Rancho Penasquitos.

The proposed Sunrise Powerlink will move electricity from Imperial Valley to San Diego. SDG&E says it's critical to our region's future.

But the proposed route through Rancho Penasquitos has residents upset. They've even organized a Concerned Citizens group to block the plan.

Group chairman Harvey Payne says, "No power line here!"

Nevermind that it would go along a SDG&E easement that's been here for 50 years -- long before the homes were built. Or that the utility agreed to spend additional money -- eight times as much as a tower -- to bury some of the lines underground.

10News says this is classic nimbyism -- not in my backyard.

We call on Mr. Payne and other homebuyers to acknowledge what was obvious when they moved in. The easement was always there for SDG&E's use. Accept that reality and don't block a reliable flow of electricity to Southern California.

That's our opinion, what's yours?
