10News Editorial: UC President Dynes
Airdate: Jan. 27, 28
President Dynes, you've given UC students 248,000 reasons to be upset.University of California San Diego Chancellor Marye Anne Fox got a heck of a recruitment incentive during her first year. On top of her $350,000 salary and over $80,000 in moving expenses, she was paid an additional quarter million dollars. Why? For sabbatical time Chancellor Fox was due at her previous university. USCD paid the $250,000 to give her time to reenergize, research and improve her outlook before coming to work.
Now, maybe having your new employer pay off your previous employer's vacation commitment is the way things are done in academia. But to further cloud the picture, UC President Robert Dynes made the deal without officially informing the Board of Regents -- nothing illegal certainly, but not the best news for students either. Especially after four straight years of tuition and fee increases.President Dynes, 10News says run these kinds of deals past the newly formed UCSD compensation committee in the future, before they’re signed, sealed and delivered. That’s our opinion, what’s yours?
