The Kentucky State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, sometimes referred to as Cash for Appliances, is scheduled to start April 22 to coincide with Earth Day.

Under the program, Kentucky residents who buy an eligible Energy Star replacement appliance from a Kentucky retailer may be eligible for a rebate. Kentucky is offering rebates on 17 qualified appliances:

Appliances:

• Clothes washers - $100 - Eligible Models
• Dishwashers - $50 - Eligible Models
• Freezers - $50 - Eligible Models
• Refrigerators - $50 - Eligible Models

Heating & Cooling Equipment:

• Room air conditioners - $40 - Eligible Models
• Central air conditioners - $100 - Eligible Models
• Air source heat pumps - $400 - Eligible Models
• Geothermal heat pumps - $400 - Eligible Models
• Gas furnaces - $300 - Eligible Models
• Gas boilers - $200 - Eligible Models

Water heaters:

• Gas condensing water heaters - $200 - Eligible Models
• Electric heat pump water heaters - $400 - Eligible Models
• Hi-efficiency gas storage water heaters (EF>=0.62) - $50 - Eligible Models
• Hi-performance gas storage water heater (EF>=0.67) - $100 - Eligible Models
• Gas tankless water heater - $300 - Eligible Models
• Solar water heaters (electric back up) - $400 - Eligible Models
• Solar water heater (gas back up) - $400 - Eligible Models

Rebates will be administered on a first-come, first-serve basis after the program is in effect. Only one rebate per product category is allowed.

The purchase must replace an older, less efficient product with a qualified Energy Star appliance purchased in Kentucky. The state is encouraging consumers who apply for the rebates to recycle their old appliances.

The state of Kentucky received about $4 million of the nearly $300 million available nationwide from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
