DEL MAR, Calif. -- The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's 69th season of racing is under way Wednesday with all the usual pomp and pageantry spectators expect when they go "Where the Turf Meets the Surf."Opening day festivities include a "one and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest" with cash prizes awarded to those who wear hats deemed the most glamorous, outrageous or have the best racing theme.The racing schedule on opening day also includes the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes, a mile-long turf race for 3-year-olds.
Bing Crosby and fellow entertainer and actor Pat O'Brien founded the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in 1937. Crosby later penned the "Where the Turf Meets the Surf" theme song.The 43-day racing season at the Del Mar Fairgrounds runs through Sept. 3. Races are held every day, except Tuesday. The first post is at 2 p.m., except on Fridays, when races start at 4 p.m.Highlights of the racing season include the $1 million Pacific Classic, set for its 18th running on Aug. 24."Four O'Clock Fridays" will include performances by Gavin Rossdale from the band Bush, Super Diamond, Pinback, The Bravery, Black Francis and Steel Pulse.
