New Year Brings New Incentive To Recycle

California Raises Stakes On Recycling Bottles, Cans

The new year will bring a new incentive to recycle -- more cash in your pocket.

California is raising the stakes on recycling bottles and cans.

You will be paying a little more upfront for beverages, but in the long run, it's more money in your pocket and less trash in the landfills.

Rosa Maria Robles is a recycling cop for the California Department of Conservation.

Robles audits companies that make, sell and recycle beverage bottles and cans in California.

Robles makes sure the state and consumers get every penny to which they're entitled.

Containers will also be more valuable in the new year.

"The amount changes, according to the size," said Robles.

The cash redemption value on glass, aluminum and plastic bottles will go up.

Bottles 24 ounces or less will be 5 cents, and bottles 24 ounces or more will be 10 cents.

If you want to set up a recycling program in your office or school, the state will give you free recycling bins to get started.
