Report: Hispanics, Women Make Up Most H1N1 County Deaths

POSTED: 7:37 pm PST November 17, 2009
UPDATED: 9:54 pm PST November 17, 2009

Hispanics and women make up most of the swine flu deaths in San Diego County, 10News reported.

According to records obtained by 10News, of the 32 swine flu deaths 20 were women, 11 were men and one was a young girl.

Nearly half the victims are Hispanic, and the next largest groups affected are Caucasians and African-Americans, according to the records.

Geographically, the deaths were spread out across the county.

Three of the victims were under the age of 24, which is considered an at-risk group. But nearly all -- 26 of 32 -- who have died were between 24 and 65 years of age.

Dr. Wilma Wooten of the San Diego County Health Department said, "It's not surprising. It actually fits the pattern we expected. Most of those people who had died have underlying conditions."

Through an open records request 10News obtained the 22 death records that have been completed. Of the deaths, nearly one-third suffered from heart conditions (six cases). Other conditions included kidney disease (three cases), diabetes (two cases) and obesity (three cases).

Wooten said, "Any chronic condition decreases the body's overall ability to fight the swine flu."
