Sharp Hospitals Get Creative For Worker Flu Shots

Sharp hospitals are getting creative to distribute vaccinations to their employees, 10News reported.

Amber Arredando has been a nurse at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for 13 years, and this week she has added another title.

Arredando said, "I'm a flu shot roamer."

Arredando is one of many roamers going floor by floor with a vaccination cart in tow. First, an announcement is made over a loudspeaker, similar to an announcement at a department store. The announcement states, "Flu shots come to the front desk."

Following the announcement, a long line of doctors and nurses is formed. One by one, they line up for a swine flu vaccination.

Sharp officials said they want to bring the vaccine to their workers to make sure they can get it if they want it. Many of the workers have direct contact with potential swine flu patients.

In all, Sharp hospitals received 4,800 doses of the vaccine for staff and at-risk patients. Administrators said they will need about 20,000 for staff alone.

"I think it's frustrating, to be told only a certain amount is coming out and then we have to wait. It's frustrating for the whole country," said Sharp Mary Birch Hospital CEO Mary Hendrikson.

In response, Sharp officials said they would prioritize. They said those with direct contact with potential swine flu patients get it first.

10News learned several other hospitals are in better shape than Sharp. UCSD received 8,700 doses and has 5,300 workers. Scripps received 12,000 units with a staff of 14,000.

Sharp officials said they are trying to find out why they received so few doses.

Several hundred thousand doses of the vaccine are expected to arrive in San Diego County and local hospitals in the next two weeks.
