Guitarist Details Bus Crash That Injured Bandmates

A long-awaited tour for a local band was brought to a sudden end by a horrific crash, and a guitarist, who drove the tour bus, shared his story with 10News' Michael Chen.

In mid-September, Kris Renfro was driving the bus carrying his band, A City Serene, on Interstate 5 near Bakersfield when he said an oncoming truck crossed the median.

"Everyone started screaming and then I saw a truck flying in the air. It hit my driver's side. I blacked out, and woke up and started punching at the windshield. Then someone, Good Samaritans, reached through the window and rescued us," said Renfro.

The collision flipped the bus, injuring all six band members.

Renfro learned the two most seriously injured came out of their comas and are expected to survive.

He said his relief is mixed with constant pain, as just about every bone in his legs was broken. He also said there is a lot of emotional pain.

"We put all our energy and every penny into this. It's like having all your dreams smashed. We barely got a taste of it and it was over. You feel defeated," said Renfro.

Despite a sprained wrist, he said he would attempt to play at a show this weekend to benefit the band.

"It's going to be hard because I'm supposed to be up there with my band. But we will be out there again, I guarantee it, we will," said Renfro.

The benefit concert will be held Saturday at Soma San Diego at 6 p.m., with proceeds going toward the band's medical bills.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
