BOULEVARD, Calif. -- Residents in an East County community are calling for new laws after they learned an arsonist has been living among them, 10News reported. At a recent meeting of the local fired board, fire officials revealed that a paroled arsonist had been living somewhere in the Tierra Heights subdivision in Boulevard. The man is being looked at in connection with a series of suspicious fires in the area, including a structure fire, two garage fires and six vegetation fires.
The man is in custody for a parole violation, and fire officials would not say much about him and cited an ongoing investigation as the reason for not offering further details.Resident Donna Tisdale has started a letter-writing campaign in support of a national effort for a registry of arsonists that would be similar to the Megan's Law Web site that tracks regsistered sex offenders. Tisdale said she believes an arson registry would help stop fires."It puts so many people at risk, and it only takes one time, so that info is particularly crucial to the public. Just knowing he's here, could strike a match and throw it on our dry brush anytime ... it's very alarming. Predators are awful, they could attack neighbors down a street. But an arsonist can wip out a whole town," said Tisdale. There is no word on whether the man will be allowed in Boulevard once he released from custody.Last week, California's senators introduced a bill for a National Registry of Arsonists, and a similar bill has already been introduced in the House of Representatives.
