SAN DIEGO -- Three San Diego City Council members responded Tuesday to Mayor Jerry Sanders' request to provide locations for the winter homeless shelter. However, 10News learned that none of the three council members have identified specific locations within their own districts like the mayor asked. There are more than 15,000 homeless people in San Diego County, and many of them rely on the city's annual winter shelter located downtown.
After many downtown residents expressed displeasure with the shelter's location, Sanders asked council members to come up with alternative locations for the shelter in their own districts."(Councilwoman Marti Emerald) identified three possible locations for a winter homeless shelter in District 7," said Geni Cavitt, Emerald's director of communications.Cavitt said she would not disclose the addresses."Don't the people have the right to know?" asked 10News' Charisse Yu."Of course they have the right to know, but there's no point in saying … if I say its going to be in location A, then people in location A are going to say, 'There's going to be a homeless shelter in our neighborhood,'" said Cavitt.Cavitt also said they need to do more homework before naming locations. Most other council members did not offer alternatives. Carl DeMaio and Todd Gloria proposed putting a shelter in other districts besides their own. DeMaio wants to put it in City Hall as a reminder of the problem. Others are leaving it to the mayor's office."We'll pick out a site in each council district and then turn it over to council. They're the ones who vote on this decision and so just by saying we don't want to participate doesn't remove the responsibility for doing that," said Sanders.Sanders said his office has a homeless outreach coordinator who will research the possible location. He expects to release the locations in the next couple weeks.
