Report: Ball State's Hoke Leaving For San Diego State

POSTED: 8:52 pm PST December 15, 2008

(Sports Network) - Ball State head football coach Brady Hoke has reportedly brushed off an offer to remain with the school and will be named the next head coach at San Diego State University as early as Tuesday.

Hoke agreed to an enhanced contract with the Cardinals earlier this year, bumping his annual salary to $240,000 per year including additional incentives, but he reportedly turned down an offer close to $350,000 from the school, according to the Star Press.

Hoke was under contract through the 2010 season, but the enhanced deal included a buyout clause that apparently has been invoked. Hoke led the Cardinals to a cinderella season in 2008, finishing 12-1 with their lone loss coming against Buffalo in the MAC Championship game. The school still finished 22nd in the final regular season BCS standings and earned a bid to the GMAC Bowl on January 6 against Tulsa.

San Diego State started its search for a new coach after firing head coach Chuck Long one day after finishing up a 2-10 campaign this season. The Aztecs have been unwilling to comment publicly on the matter, saying they would reserve comment until a press conference regarding the matter was scheduled.

A spokesman for the university confirmed Monday that a press conference in reference to the football program is scheduled for 4 p.m. (et) on Tuesday.

Hoke had started to build up the Ball State program even before its near-miss at an undefeated season in 2008. The Cardinals produced a 7-6 overall record, and a 5-2 conference mark in 2007, leading to their first bowl appearance since the 1996 season -- receiving an invitation to the International Bowl.
