NCAA Game Summary - Rutgers At Army

POSTED: 7:52 am PDT October 26, 2009

(Sports Network) - Joe Martinek rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, leading Rutgers to a 27-10 victory over Army at Michie Stadium.

Freshman quarterback Tom Savage finished with 164 yards while completing half of his 20 attempts for the Scarlet Knights (5-2), who swept their five-game non-conference schedule this season. Tim Brown logged 101 yards on four receptions for the victors.

Lonnie Liggins scored the lone touchdown for the Black Knights (3-5), who have dropped two straight since beating SEC member Vanderbilt. Trent Steelman ended with just 16 passing yards on 2-of-6 throws while adding 43 yards on the ground on 15 carries in defeat.

Alex Carlton booted a 41-yarder to cap Army's first drive, but Martinek's four-yard TD run midway through the first quarter gave Rutgers a 7-3 lead.

San San Te extended the margin for the Scarlet Knights with a 27-yard field goal later in the opening quarter, which ended with a special teams score from the visitors.

Army punter Jonathan Bulls bobbled a long snap, and Steve Beauharnais broke through the line for the block, scooped up the loose ball and went 11 yards the other way for a 17-3 advantage, which was the score at halftime.

Liggins' 17-yard scamper early in the third was countered by Te's 41-yarder that ricocheted off the right upright and through for three points at the 6:35 mark of the frame.

An Army fumble in its own territory set up Martinek's six-yard touchdown run on the second play of the fourth quarter, and Army failed to net a first down in the final stanza to drop another tough decision.
