GAME NOTES: The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Army Black Knights are set for a non-conference showdown at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.

Vanderbilt is 2-3 overall this season, but the club is a disappointing 0-3 versus Southeastern Conference opponents. The Commodores were simply no match for Ole Miss last Saturday, as they fell by a 23-7 final. They have scored a grand total of 19 points in the three SEC games, as a lack of offensive punch has been the main reason for the double-digit defeats.

As for Army, it is one of the lone remaining FBS Independents, and like Vanderbilt, the Black Knights have lost three of the five games they have played thus far. It will be interesting to see how the team responds after last weekend's heartbreaking 17-16 loss to Tulane in front of the home crowd. The loss was the second in a row after a promising 2-1 start to the campaign.

Vanderbilt took a 4-3 lead in the all-time series with Army by claiming victory in the most recent meeting back in 1991.

In its two wins this season, Vanderbilt scored a total of 81 points, including 45 points against FCS foe Western Carolina in the season opener. Therefore, the team's average of 20.0 ppg is a bit skewed. Clearly, the strength of the offense is a ground attack that accounts for 195.0 ypg on an average of 4.5 ypc. Of the 12 touchdowns scored by the offense this season, 10 have come via the run. Warren Norman paces the Commodores with 336 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and his average of 6.7 yards per attempt is outstanding. As for the passing attack, Larry Smith and the receivers leave much to be desired. Smith, the club's quarterback, has completed only 46.5 percent of his passes for 702 yards and two touchdowns against four interceptions. Last weekend against Ole Miss, Smith connected on 10-of-27 tosses for 69 yards, a touchdown and a pick. Udom Umoh caught three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown, while Norman rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries in defeat. Ole Miss outgained Vandy, 397-240, and the Rebels controlled the ball for more than 35 minutes.

Opponents are scoring 15.6 ppg against Vanderbilt this season, and the defense has been far better than the team's offense. The Commodores are only yielding 292.2 total ypg, impressive by any standards. They are giving up 3.9 yards per rushing attempt and a mere 8.8 yards per pass completion with eight interceptions against four passing scores. Opponents are making good on just 30 percent of their third down conversion attempts against Vandy, which has 13 sacks to its credit. Chris Marve leads the 'Dores with 46 total tackles and three forced fumbles. Myron Lewis has three interceptions, and Theron Kadri has posted three sacks. As mentioned, the defense did allow 397 total yards to Ole Miss last weekend, but that figure is not horrendous considering the explosiveness of the Rebels and the fact that Smith and the Vandy offense were unable to sustain drives and give the defense a break.

Like Vanderbilt, Army struggles to move the ball and score points. The Black Knights are generating a modest 19.2 ppg and 299.2 total ypg. They rely heavily on the ground attack, as the team has attempted 267 runs against only 68 passes. The running game accounts for 231.0 ypg, and Patrick Mealy leads the club with 303 yards and one touchdown while averaging a staggering 8.4 ypc. Kingsley Ehie brings 253 rushing yards into Saturday's affair, and Trent Steelman is close behind with 243 yards. Steelman, the team's quarterback, has started all five games under center, and has done little damage with his arm. The offense generated just 222 total yards in the loss to Tulane last time out, and 56 rushing attempts netted only 3.5 yards on average. Army did win the time of possession battle by almost eight minutes, but the offense simply wasn't able to capitalize on many drives. Steelman led the way with 95 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Opponents are scoring 22.8 ppg against Army, which is giving up only 300.4 total ypg. The Black Knights have been tough against the run, allowing just 111.6 ypg, 3.4 yards per carry and five rushing scores in five outings. Foes have made some big plays through the air against Army, but the pass defense is better categorized as mediocre than poor. The Black Knights have 12 sacks and 10 takeaways to their credit. Stephen Anderson leads the squad with 42 total tackles, and Josh McNary has 10.5 TFLs already, including 5.5 sacks. Donovan Travis has intercepted three passes. It is hard to put too much blame on the Army defense for the loss to Tulane, as the Black Knights only allowed 17 points and 292 total yards. However, with zero sacks and just one takeaway, not many impact plays were made by the unit.

The Commodores get the nod in this clash, as they simply can't afford a loss to Army. This contest will be close, however, as the Black Knights limit opponent possessions with their clock-eating running game.
