Northern Colorado (4-0) At Air Force (2-0)
GAME NOTES: The Reggie Minton Air Force Classic title is on the line tonight, as the Falcons host the Northern Colorado Bears at Clune Arena.
Air Force, the host of this four-team, two-day event, had no trouble in its first round game, coasting past Dickinson State, 95-77, last night. The 95 points scored is the most by the Falcons since a 111-88 win over Denver in 1999. The team's only other game prior to this event was a 65-54 win over Western State on November 13th.
As for the Bears, they participated in the Rainbow Class to start this season, a tournament they won with three straight wins. Last night, UNC took a step towards winning its second straight in-season tourney, capturing a 66-62 win over Texas Southern. The team is now 4-0 for the first time since 1984 and just the sixth time since 1901.
In terms of the all-time series, Air Force holds a 12-2 lead over UNC and it has won 12 straight meeting since losing to the Bears during the 1956-57 campaign.
Will Figures converted a couple of free throws with 5.1 seconds remaining, sealing the Bears' 66-62 victory over Texas Southern last night. UNC shot 53.0 percent from the floor in the win and scored 10 of its final 14 points at the charity stripe. For the game, the Bears converted 22-of-31 free-throw attempts. Devon Beitzel had 17 points in the triumph, while Taylor Montgomery and Mike Proctor chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Air Force shot a sizzling 57.4 percent from the floor and made 25 free throws, as it coasted past Dickinson State last night. The Falcons also took advantage of Dickinson State down low, outscoring it 42-12 in the paint. Evan Washington went a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor for 18 points and six assists to lead Air Force. It was a nice follow up to the opener, when he tallied 14 points and eight boards. Grant Parker, who led the team with 26 points in the opener, added 16 points last night and he too made all six of his field goal tries.
Behind another efficient shooting night, expect Air Force to prevail over the Bears in this one.
