SAN DIEGO -- Gas prices in the San Diego area have surged 27 cents in the past week, the Utility Consumers' Action Network said Monday.
According to the San Diego-based organization, the estimated average for regular unleaded gasoline in San Diego County is now $1.97, up from a previous average of $1.70 a gallon.
The average has risen 18 cents in the past four days, according to UCAN, which routinely surveys 483 San Diego County gas stations.
"At this rate, the average price of regular unleaded could easily break the $2-a-gallon barrier by this evening," said Charles Langley, UCAN's gasoline project manager.
The price spikes are being blamed on pipeline problems in Arizona, where gas lines have returned to local stations and there is a shortage of the special summer blend fuel that motorists need, as well as multiple refining problems in California.
