Superior Court Closed For Next 2 Wednesdays

POSTED: 10:46 am PST November 9, 2009

The San Diego Superior Court system will be closed the next two Wednesdays, first for a holiday and the second because of a state- ordered closure to save money, it was announced Monday.

This Wednesday, Nov. 11, is Veteran's Day, a normal holiday for the courts.

The closing for budgetary reasons will be the following Wednesday, Nov. 18. The unprecedented one-day-per-month closures were ordered in June by the California Judicial Council because of the state's budget crisis.

The order affects courtrooms and business offices in all 58 counties, and employees take unpaid furlough days.

Union members voted for a contract change allowing the furloughs, which will help bridge a $5.5 million gap in the court's budget for the fiscal year. The San Diego Superior Court is expected to save $384,000 each time the courts close for a day.

Most judges are also expected to take a voluntary pay cut for the days the courts are closed.

The closures affect courts in downtown San Diego, Kearny Mesa, Vista, El Cajon and Chula Vista.

Court officials will reset hearings currently scheduled on the closure dates, and the public is urged to visit the court's Web site at sdcourt.ca.gov to handle traffic tickets or obtain court information. A recorded message is available at 619-450-7400.
