How Much Will Fourth Of July Weekend Cost City?

Costs Include Police, Environmental Services

The San Diego Police Department said they are expecting more than 1 million people at San Diego beaches this weekend.

With that many people in one area, 10News learned how much the city will pay for the Fourth of July weekend.

Capt. Shelley Zimmerman of the San Diego Police Department is in charge of making sure all police officers know where to go and what to do.

"We're going to have officers on foot, they're going to be on bikes, on all-terrain vehicles," said Zimmerman.

The extra officers and services come at a price, 10News learned.

Last year, the city of San Diego spent more than $600,000 on police overtime from the Fourth of July weekend and about $74,000 on firefighters and medics.

This year, the city estimated that it will cost $55,000 to run environmental services like trash and recycling, and an additional $200,000 for staffing and operations.

That means if last year's weekend costs stay consistent and this year's estimates hold, the city will spend a little under $1 million to celebrate Fourth of July weekend.

Zimmerman said the public tells her it is worth it.

"We've gotten great feedback from the community that they appreciate us being out here making sure that they're just having a great time," said Zimmerman.

With alcohol not allowed at beaches, Zimmerman said it has created a more family friendly atmosphere. However, that has already created new problems like lost children.

Zimmerman said having police and city services is vital no matter the cost.

"Just by being visible we're preventing a bunch of issues that would have happened if we're not visible," said Zimmerman.
